The Church has traditionally taught children to fear God.
Fear of punishment and fear of hell then motivates their actions as adults.
So those who seek to do God's work in the world are mostly motivated by fear.
The alternative is to do what you like and chase after pleasures which, they have been taught, results in hell.
So fear of damnation and eternal torment in hell lies beneath their good works.
But fear is no motivation.
Fear begets fear.
And terror begets terrorists.
So much of their good work is spoiled by fear.
Our task is to allay their fears.
And change their motivation from fear to love.
