There is homophobia in the AFL*.
Players and officials from every club attack gay men and threaten them.
They blame and shame us and they send us to hell.
Homophobic taunts are common.
And hostility towards anyone suspected of being gay is rife.
Sports are among the last bastions of homophobia.
And repressed homosexuality can do no good.
The players are afraid.
Afraid of their teammates' reactions.
Afraid of the coach and administration.
But no good comes from hiding your true self.
Many who have come out have been surprised by the support and love shown to them by those they feared would reject them.
So I would encourage you to come out.
You might be surprised.
